Actionable small-bath layout moves from a former kitchen and bath designer: better door swings, smarter shower footprints, compact vanities, ventilation and ...
Welcome to Remodel Diva. I’m Elena Miller, and if you’ve ever stood in your kitchen wondering why a “simple refresh” somehow turned into a spiral of tile samples, budget math, and contractor voicemails, you’re in the right place.
I write about kitchen and bathroom remodeling because I genuinely love it. I love the design side, yes, but I also love what’s behind the walls: supply lines, venting, waterproofing, clearances, and the unglamorous details that make a space work beautifully for years. If you want a home that looks great and works smoothly on a regular Tuesday morning, that’s my sweet spot.

How I got here
My remodeling education started young. I grew up holding the flashlight for my dad, a residential plumber. While other kids were playing in the yard, I was learning how a trap works, why vents matter, and why you never assume a shutoff valve will cooperate. That early exposure gave me a lifelong fascination with how homes behave behind the drywall.
Later, I earned a degree in Interior Design and spent 12 years at a design-build firm that specialized exclusively in kitchens and bathrooms. I worked as a kitchen and bath designer and project manager, which meant my days bounced between layout planning, jobsite walkthroughs, budget reality checks, and problem-solving when old houses did what old houses do.
I know the dusty reality of demolition just as well as the nuance of choosing the right quartz countertop. I’ve seen gorgeous plans fail because of one overlooked detail, and I’ve watched “not fancy” choices outperform luxury finishes because they were installed properly and designed thoughtfully.

Why Remodel Diva exists
I started writing for Remodel Diva because I saw too many homeowners get overwhelmed, overcharged, or discouraged by the remodeling process. Remodeling has a way of making smart, capable people feel like they’re failing. It is loud, messy, and full of decisions you didn’t know you needed to make.
My mission is simple: democratize renovation knowledge. I want you to understand what you’re paying for, what actually moves the needle in a kitchen or bath, and where you can confidently spend or save. You do not need to become a contractor. You just need enough clarity to ask the right questions and make decisions you won’t regret.
Think of Remodel Diva as the calm, organized friend in your corner who can translate contractor-speak, spot a layout issue before it becomes a daily annoyance, and remind you that you are not the first person to shower at the gym for a week while waiting on tile.
What you can expect here
Everything on Remodel Diva is written to be practical, realistic, and kind. I’m warm about the process, but I’m not fluffy about the details. Here’s what you’ll find:
- Clear explanations without the jargon. I break down intimidating topics like plumbing rough-ins, ventilation, waterproofing, and code-adjacent best practices in a way that actually makes sense.
- Design advice you can use. Layout, lighting, storage, finish coordination, and the “why does this room feel off?” fixes that don’t require starting over.
- Budget and value guidance. Where to splurge, where to save, and how to avoid paying premium prices for low-impact upgrades.
- Reality-based planning. Timelines, ordering lead times, what to expect during demolition, and how to make decisions before your contractor is standing there waiting.
- Storage solutions (because yes, I’m obsessed). Clever cabinet interiors, functional pantry setups, vanity organization, and small-space tricks that make daily life easier.

My remodeling philosophy
I’m not here to push one “right” style. I’m here to help you build a kitchen or bathroom that fits how you actually live.
I believe the best remodels are:
- Function-first. A beautiful space that doesn’t work is just an expensive frustration.
- Durable. Water, heat, and daily wear are undefeated. Materials and installation details matter.
- Well-planned. Many budget blowups are planning blowups in disguise.
- Honest about tradeoffs. You can absolutely have your dream kitchen, but you might not be able to have every dream feature at once. I’ll help you prioritize.
Start here
If you’re new here, start with this mindset: you don’t need perfect taste, unlimited money, or endless patience to remodel successfully. You need a plan, a few non-negotiables, and a basic understanding of the “invisible” stuff like plumbing, electrical, ventilation, and waterproofing.
And you need permission to be a beginner. Everyone starts there.
If you want a simple next step, head to the site’s kitchen and bathroom planning guides and pick the one that matches your project. I’ll walk you through the decisions in the order that keeps you sane.
One transparency note: some articles may include affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend products and methods I’d use in a real remodel, and I’ll always tell you when a link is sponsored.
See you in the kitchens and bathrooms,
Elena
